Vickie Smith: In 1998 I attended a retreat at a Benedictine monastery. The primary focus of the retreat was to provide the retreatent with a variety of methods to explore and examine his or her inner nature. During this retreat, I recognized that my physical body was not in tune with my inner nature, and that I was not as physically agile and balanced as I had once been. I decided to start attending to my body with the same attention that I was giving to my inner nature, but didn’t want to return to the previous methods of exercise that I had practiced in the past. I had heard about yoga, but didn’t know anything about it, so I went in search for as much information as I could find.
